Photographic makeup
is unlike everyday street wear makeup. It's important to enhance
the
eyes and lips in photography, which can at times seem to be oveshadowed
by other aspects of the photograph. In other words, they can
"disappear", in a manner of speaking. It may surprise you, but in
commercial photography where a natural, no-makeup look is wanted,
makeup
is still used to get the look!
Another important use of
photo makeup is to even out
skin tones. We
all have uneven skin coloration, but usually, we just don't
notice it
when we're interacting with each other on a daily basis. When you stare
at a photograph, however, it becomes quite visible.
Street makeup seems
to take care of these things nicely for the human eye, but
the
camera can often see through street makeup as if it
weren't even there.
Lastly, makeup
adds contour to the
face. Reducing a three-dimensional object (a face) to a
two-dimensional plane (a photograph) makes the face look flatter and
wider. This is actually helpful for a thin face, but for other face
shapes, some artful contouring is useful to counteract this effect.
We've
been ahead of this curve for many years, having had makeup
available
for all our portrait clients since we began. Photographic

Artist Gaynel
Wadsworth (Linn) is our go-to makeup pro. In
fact, some of the photographs you see on this site were made on and
around her property.
We feel good
makeup is
so much a part of good photography that its absence cannot be
compensated for without extensive retouching. That's why we
suggest
Gaynel's makeup as
a part of every senior girl's session.
As for senior guys, we
understand that you may not feel comfortable with
makeup, but we do recommend considering it. It really isn't
uncommon for men to have makeup done when they'll be in front
of a camera: Gaynel has done lots
of
politicians,
both men and women, for their television appearances, and
most of
the men we photograph for portraits have Gaynel do their makeup.
In fact, male
professionals in all fields, from real
estate agents to presidential candidates and state governors, widely
understand this, and wouldn't
go in front of a camera without professional makeup!
